Te Taurapa-O-Te-Waka

A nelson city council commissioned project, designed by artist, sculptor and good friend / fellow surfer, Maia Hegglund.  We worked closely with Maia to model this beautiful artwork, refining the detailing in prep for steel cutting.   A milestone for this region in terms of Māori representation in public sculpture, Te Taurapa-O-Te-Waka sits adjacent the Maitai awa and can be enjoyed by Maitai walkway users, as well as viewed from the main road when driving across the Bridge – very impressive at night when lit up.

The Taurapa (or prow) of the maori waka represents the migration of the people to Aotearoa, and in the context of the region, is befitting of the presence of Mana Whenua in Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka-a-Māui.
